Prémio Valmor de Arquitetura
The Prémio Valmor de Arquitetura ( Portuguese for Valmor Prize for Architecture ), or just Prémio Valmor for short , is an annually awarded, financially endowed prize for outstanding architecture announced by the city of Lisbon . Originally only awarded to new residential buildings, renovations, new buildings of all kinds and landscape architecture are now also awarded.
history
The city of Lisbon donated the financially endowed architecture prize in 1898 after the 2nd Viscount of Valmor, Fausto de Queirós Guedes , bequeathed part of his legacy to the city for this purpose. The deceased wanted the award to go equally to the architect and the owner of the excellent building. The city first awarded the prize in 1902, and within a short time it developed into the most prestigious architecture prize in Portugal.
The winners are selected by a jury, which in turn consists of three architects appointed by the city administration. The architects each come from one of three named institutions: the National Academy of Fine Arts (Academia Nacional de Belas Artes) , the Association of Architects (Ordem dos Arquitectos) and the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa) .
Originally, the prize was only awarded to new residential buildings. In the meantime, however, renovations of existing buildings, structures of all kinds and general landscape architecture in Lisbon are also recognized. In the meantime, not only one prize winner has been selected, the jury also awards special mentions (menção honrosa) for individual works.
In 1982, the municipal architecture prize, which had also existed since 1943, was merged with the Valmor prize, since then this has officially been called the “Prémio Valmor e Municipal de Arquitetura”, in German “Valmor and municipal architecture prize”. According to its regulations, the endowment of the Valmor Prize varies depending on the city's annual budget situation, while the municipal architecture prize was awarded with 25,000 euros.
