The square is right in front of the Palácio Nacional de Belém , the 16th century residence of the Portuguese President . In the middle of the square, which is named after the Portuguese governor and conqueror of India, Afonso de Albuquerque , there is a monument designed by Silva Pinto and Costa Mota tio , inaugurated in 1902.
