The Praça da Galiza ( Galicia Square) is a square in the Portuguese city of Porto . As the intersection of Rua de Júlio Dinis and Rua do Campo Alegre , it is a traffic junction in the eastern area of the Massarelos district .
It is named after the Spanish province of Galicia , which is adjacent to the north of Portugal . The name was proposed by the President of the Comissão Administrativa of the city of Porto, Alfredo de Magalhães , during a meeting of the Câmara Municipal on June 28, 1936. A statue of the Galician by Salvador Barata Feyo was placed on the square as a symbol of the friendly relations between the two peoples Lyricist Rosalía de Castro erected.
The Escola Gomes Teixeira is also located on the square.
