In the city center run underground two subnets: The erstgebaute part consists of a dreiästigen network, in the center of the lines can in a Gleisdreieck change the road in all relations. In 2015 there was also a branch line from the eastern parts of the city that ends at Astrid station . This section had already existed as a shell for several years , further shell reactivations are planned for the future.

In the original planning in the early 1970s, the completely underground network was laid out over a length of 15 km and 22 stops. The first section was opened on May 25, 1975 between the stops Groenplaats and Diamant (at the main station ) with a length of 1.3 km. Further expansion took place in 1980, 1990 (with the Van Eeden stop), 1996 (with the Astrid , Elisabeth, Handel, Schijnpoort and Sport stops) and 2006 (with the above-ground Sportpaleis stop) in the northeast of the network. In 2015 the branch from Astrid to Muggenberg followed with the intermediate station Zegel, the other intermediate stations Carnot and Drink are currently not served, further expansion with the introduction of line 10 from Wijnegem into the premetronet is planned.
