The Prime Minister of Egypt is the head of government of the Egyptian government.

history

In the late 1970s, there were various governments that did not work due to conflicts between the Prime Minister and the President. From 1981 to 2011 the national democratic party had a majority in Egypt's parliament and provided the president. The national democratic party was dissolved in 2011 due to the revolution against President Hosni Mubarak .

Previously, under the 1971 Constitution as an amendment, the Prime Minister's role was limited to overseeing the Cabinet as the President was currently both Head of State and Government.

The prime minister now heads the cabinet and the entire government of the country. Like other members of the cabinet, he can propose laws to parliament. The Prime Minister also has the power to enforce laws. He is also responsible for ensuring that public services are available and for imposing penalties which the government must accept.

The President used to have these rights under the 1971 Constitution.

The Prime Minister and Cabinet also assist the President in setting and overseeing general government policy in the country.

Nubar Pasha was a Christian Egyptian-American politician who served as the first Prime Minister of Egypt. He served for three terms during his career. His first term in office was between 1878 and 1879.

When different parties control parliament and the presidency, the government is run jointly. Some of these joint governments came into being in the 1970s but were very ineffective.
