The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ( CSMVS ; Marathi : छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज वस्तुसंग्रहालय [ tʃʰʌtrʌpati ʃiʋaːdʒi mʌhaːraːdʒ ʋʌstu sʌŋɡrʌhaːlʌjʌ ]), formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India , is a museum in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay). It is located on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Mumbai, near the Bombay High Court and the Gateway of India . Its collection includes around 50,000 objects from the fields of art, archeology and natural history.

history

The foundation stone of the museum was laid on November 11, 1905 in the presence of the then British heir to the throne, Prince George , Prince of Wales . The original name of the facility was also chosen in his honor. The architect of the museum was George Wittet . It opened on January 10, 1922. In the early 2000s, the museum was renamed in memory of the Marathi ruler Shivaji (1630–1680).

The collections

The museum's collection includes around 50,000 objects from the fields of art, archeology and natural history. Objects from all cultural areas of India are shown, so that the museum has the character of a national museum. There is a gallery for sculptures, a gallery for art objects from the Himalayas and a gallery dedicated to the representation of Krishna. Paintings and handicrafts from Europe can also be seen, as well as a rich Chinese and Japanese collection. In the forestry department, the indigenous trees are shown, a small geological department presents stone samples, minerals and fossils from the area.

The “Maritime Heritage Gallery” shows objects that have to do with Indian shipping in a broad sense. In 2008 two new galleries were opened, the "Karl and Meherbai Khandalavala collection", which u. a. includes an extensive collection of Nainsukh's works , as well as a coin cabinet with Indian coins.

The presentation of the collections

The museum has a main building and an extension building.

The following departments will be presented in the main building in 2019:

Ground floor - historical plans and photographs, Indian sculptures

1st floor - printmaking, Himalayan art, Indian metal objects and Indian handicrafts, Krishna gallery, Indian miniature painting

2nd floor - Jehangir Sabavala Gallery, Sir Ratan Tata and Sir Dorab Tata Gallery, Chinese and Japanese art, antique weapons
