Prince Karl Palace

The Prinz-Karl-Palais , known as Douglas-Palais until 1900 , was a representative city palace of Prince Karl von Baden in Karlsruhe .

history

Until 1872 there was the Langensteinsche Garten on the north side of Stephanienstraße between Karlstraße and Hirschstraße. A city palace for the Langenstein family was originally to be built on a section of this area .

Between 1878 and 1884, Count Wilhelm Douglas (1849–1908), a member of the Douglas family , had the architect Karl Dyckerhoff build a representative palace as his main residence. However, the count withdrew from the public around 1900 and sold the palace to Prince Karl von Baden, after whom it was subsequently renamed.

The main building was largely destroyed in 1944 during World War II. Only a few remains of the building were preserved and were later demolished. Only the former riding stables, in which the Karlsruhe calibration office is now located, remained undamaged.
