Prior of the Caporioni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The prior of the Caporioni was from the Middle Ages until 1870 the head of the Rioni in the Camera Capitolina (old organ of the city government of Rome).

history

From the late Middle Ages onwards, each rione was led by a “ capo rione ” (or “caporione”). Each Caporione was supported in his task of controlling public order by a few simple citizens he trusted, called constabili or even "capotori" and thus the city guard. The Caporione des Rione I, however, had a special role: He was also called the “Prior of the Caporioni” and, together with the three Conservatori, formed the so-called “Magistrato Romano” and thus exercised the dual role of Caporione and the subordinate magistrate. In the memorial texts, the prior of the Caporioni is given in Latin ( "cap. Reg. Urbis priore" ) or abbreviated as CRP ( Caput Regione Populi ).

This person mostly came from the city aristocracy ( patricians ). In contrast to other Caporioni who only existed until the middle of the 18th century, the post of Prior of the Caporioni was eventually given the reform of Pius IX. abolished with the special law by Motu proprio of October 1, 1847 entitled “ Struttura e organizzazione municipale e dell'amministrazione degli uffici” ( “Structure and municipal organization and administration of offices” ).
