Camera Capitolina

The Camera Capitolina (also called Camera Urbis ) was the city council that was responsible for the economic administration of the city of Rome during the existence of the Papal States until 1870 .

Historical representation

The Camera Capitolina was founded in the 14th century by the Curia Capitolina as an independent institution in Rome, headed by a Senator. The chamber was directed by the Roman magistrate, which consisted of the three conservatori and the prior of the Caporioni . These persons were selected from the Roman patriciate and remained in office for short periods, usually 3 months, with the option of successive extensions of up to 1 year (and only in exceptional cases by up to two): They presided over the court the Conservatori for Economic and Administrative Disputes. Within the chamber there were several officials such as the treasurer, the chamberlain, the lawyer and the notary. In 1847, with the reform of Pius IX. (with a special law by motu proprio of October 1, 1847 with the title Struttura e organizzazione municipale e dell'amministrazione degli uffici ) the number of Conservatori increased to 5, the office of prior abolished and the office more divided.

The main income of the Camera Capitolina, however small, came from the proceeds of four fiefs over which they exercised their jurisdiction (Cori, Magliano, Vitorchiano and Barbano) and from river tolls, while most of the expenses for the management of public buildings such as roads, bridges, fountains and aqueducts was used.

With the annexation of the municipality of Rome by the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, the chamber and the offices connected with it were finally dissolved after more than five centuries. The structural reorganization of the municipality with the final anchoring of a mayor and the modern city council was similar to that which is still in use today.
