Pro-Linux with 7.5 million page views a month, one of the largest German Internet - portals on GNU / Linux and free software .

The portal's pages include security alerts, a program database, job vacancies, and a calendar of events. Articles, reviews, workshops, and guides were also published by June 2020. Readers could comment and exchange ideas on a forum . The target group included beginners as well as advanced and experts. The portal, whose information and services are all freely accessible, is run by volunteers and filled with content.

history

In early 1999, the portal was founded by Mirko Lindner went by the name linuxworld the grid, but was after problems with the domain linuxworld.de in 4linux renamed. In April 1999 the operators agreed on the name Pro-Linux , which has remained until today. From the year 2000 stands followed at various trade fairs, including LinuxTag . The website was expanded, supplemented and got a new layout in 2002 and 2004. In January 2010 a revised design and the in-house developed CMS NewsBoard3 (NB3) were presented.

Pro-Linux published over 21,000 messages (as of February 2015). Pro-Linux offers an application database that is editorially managed and lists over 19,000 applications with over 130,000 versions.

On May 4, 2020, the site operator Mirko Lindner announced that the project would be discontinued at the end of the month and in future only available in the form of an archive.
