ProWiki

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ProWiki is free (under GPL ) wiki software written in Perl , the characteristic feature of which is generative fractality. This means the possibility of giving wiki pages new properties at each point, which are inherited through the namespace.

Fractality

Individual aspects of fractality are:

  • A hierarchical page structure in the Wiki (page trees) and thus the establishment of multiple namespaces
  • The possibility of (re) configuration of properties for each page (this takes place in Prowiki "on the spot" via a so-called context page, which is formally a sub-page of the configured page, and not in a config file. Such configuration sub-pages have all the characteristics normal pages (editability, versioning, configurability, ...))
  • A comprehensive repertoire of (around 100) configurable page properties (layout, rights, language, menus, default values, ...)
  • The inheritance of properties on subordinate pages in the namespace (until new properties are set on lower-lying pages)
  • A page together with its sub-pages can be made into an independent wiki (“ subwiki ”) with its own listings for “last changes”, “all pages / index” and a separate text search area.

Fractality enables a high degree of adaptability to different needs within a wiki and supports the self-organization of the user.

  • Personal wikis of any depth
  • Thematic clusters with completely independent projects that still want to fall back on shared resources

development

ProWiki was created in 2001 as a spin-off from UseModWiki and has been used consistently for Wiki projects ever since. There were always new publications, usually at intervals of one to four weeks. ProWiki has been in widespread use since 2004 and has been under the GPL since mid-2006 . The last release was version 2.0.045 from October 14, 2006. Since then, further developments have only been used on the company's own server (wikiservice.at).

Range of applications

ProWiki can be used particularly in those areas in which different namespaces with unpredictable depth are foreseen. This can range from scientific to everyday to artistic applications.
