Production driver (film profession)

A production driver in a film and television production is a professional driver or chauffeur who is mainly employed to transport people.

In Germany, in accordance with Section 1 of the Passenger Transport Act, the payment or business-related transport of people, including with motor vehicles, is subject to approval.

tasks

The primary task of production drivers is to transport protagonists , team members (directors, producers, etc.) and guests.

These are different journeys, e.g. B. Pick-up from airports / train stations, trips between hotel and location , trips from one location to another, etc.

Secondly, production drivers act as the “extended arm” of the reception manager and thus the entire production .

Production-related purchases, equipment trips, repair trips, shooting material trips are just as much a part of it as the responsibility for smaller organizational tasks assigned by the recording manager.

As a rule, production drivers are equipped with a cash register to pay for their purchases and other consumption costs (especially vehicle costs). The use of the cash register for the specified purposes and correct billing are of course required.

The production driver is often the first contact for everyone involved in a film and television production and thus the figurehead for the production company.

working hours

Production drivers and chauffeurs in professional passenger transport must adhere to the national regulations on driving and rest times.

Working hours in this occupational field are limited to 10–12 hours by collective agreements .

In Germany, Section 5 , Clause 1 of the Working Hours Act usually applies .

Transportation Manager

For large film or TV productions, in addition to the set manager, there is a transportation manager or, colloquially, a car captain , who coordinates all trips, transport and purchase orders for the various film production departments.
