Propaedeutic

The Propaedeutic (from Greek  προπαιδεύω propaideuein “teach in advance”, from pro “before” and paideuein “teach, teach”) is usually a preparatory event for a scientific field. The term is often used synonymously with introductory event; it can be an introductory lecture in a subject area (often with a final exam), but mostly courses that are intended to convey knowledge that is essential for the course.

Propaedeutics can be found in various scientific areas:

  • In Austria, the psychotherapeutic propaedeutic course has been the first part of a two-stage training course to become a psychotherapist since 1991 .
  • A philological preparatory course is usually part of a theological pre-seminar.
  • A theological propaedeutic is usually compulsory for theology students .
  • In the pharmacy course there is a preparatory course in the subject “Pharmaceutical Technology”, which prepares for the production of drug forms in the main course.
  • Propaedeutics as teaching about the introduction to a science.
  • In Austria there is a Japanese preparatory course in Japanology .
  • In the Netherlands, the bachelor's degree at Hoger beroepsonderwijs (higher vocational school) is graduated; there you go through a one-year “propedeuse” before the main phase begins.
  • In Romance linguistics, some universities in Germany offer introductory courses for introducing language skills.
  • In Switzerland, studying at art colleges (e.g. Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK) requires a preparatory course that introduces the students to the artistic, performing or musical arts.
