Psychotherapeutic propaedeutic course

The psychotherapeutic propaedeutic course in Austria has been the first part of a two-stage training course to become a psychotherapist since 1992 . The second level based on this is the technical specifics .

Training to become a psychotherapist takes place in Austria in accordance with the Psychotherapy Act, Federal Law Gazette No. 361/1990.

Almost 20 training institutions are currently approved for the psychotherapeutic propaedeutic course - in Vienna, Krems an der Donau, Linz, Graz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck or on Lake Constance. The traditional training providers are associations, but there is also the possibility of completing the preparatory course in a church or university context (e.g. Danube University ).

The preparatory course comprises a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, knowledge of various specialist areas is conveyed, for example psychological diagnostics , methodology in research and science, ethics , psychiatry or the legal basis. The Austrian Psychotherapy Act has precisely defined the content of this training section:

  • The theoretical part comprises at least 765 hours of which
    • 120 hours on the basics and border areas of psychotherapy, problem history and development of psychotherapeutic schools,
    • 30 hours of personality theories
    • 60 hours of general psychology and developmental psychology
    • 30 hours of rehabilitation, special and curative education
    • 60 hours of psychological diagnosis and assessment
    • 60 hours of psychosocial forms of intervention
    • 30 hours of introduction to medical terminology
    • 120 hours of psychiatry, psychopathology and psychosomatics of all ages (especially for children, adolescents and old people)
    • 45 hours of psychopharmacology and the psychotropic effects of pharmaceuticals
    • 15 hours of first aid
    • 75 hours of fundamentals of research and science methodology
    • 30 hours of ethics questions
    • 90 hours framework for the practice of psychotherapy, as well
  • The practical part of at least 550 hours includes:
    • 50 hours of individual or group self-awareness
    • 480 hours of internship in dealing with behavioral or suffering people in a health or social service facility under the professional guidance and supervision of the head or a deputy including
    • 20 hours of accompanying participation in an internship supervision

Depending on the provider, the preparatory course ends with an examination or a written paper.
