Prophet Elias Cathedral
The Prophet Elias Cathedral ( Arabic كاتدرائية النبي إلياس, DMG Kātidrāʾīyat an-Nabī Ilyās ) is the cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Syrian city of Aleppo , in the northern part of which it is located. The Prophet Elias Cathedral should not be confused with the Maronite Saint Elias Cathedral in the traditional Christian district of al-Judaide .
history
The Prophet Elias Cathedral was built at the end of the 20th century and consecrated on December 17, 2000. On that day it became the cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Aleppo.
During the civil war in Syria , the cathedral-based Greek Orthodox Archbishop Bulos Jasidschi was abducted at gunpoint together with the Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Gregorios Johanna Ibrahim in April 2013. The two clergymen have not appeared since then, and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Prophet Elias has been without an archbishop since then.
