Protein Information Resource

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Protein Information Resource (PIR) is a data source for the sequences and functions of proteins at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC). It operates the PIRSF (Protein Family Classification System), iProClass (Integrated Protein Knowledgebase) and iProLINK (Literature Information & Knowledge) databases.

history

PIR was founded in 1984 by the National Biomedical Research Foundation (NBRF). In 2002, PIR founded the protein sequence database UniProt together with the EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) and the SIB (Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) by merging the individual databases PIR-PSD , Swiss-Prot and TrEMBL .
