Protestantism in Tajikistan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Protestants make up less than 1% of the population in Tajikistan .

Origin and number

As a result of the resettlement of Germans from Russia , many Lutherans came to the country, but most of them emigrated in the 1990s (see also ELKRAS ). There is only one Lutheran congregation in Dushanbe today .

Among the free churches , the Seventh-day Adventists and Baptists in Tajikistan are particularly active. The Baptist mission began in 1929 ; Today there are 33 Baptist congregations with around 1,000 members. The chairman is the German-born Alexandr Vervai.

Many Christians also come from South Asia , as well as from Korea .

situation

Freedom of religion is mentioned in the Tajik constitution. However, the authorities view the Protestant Christians in Tajikistan from the same perspective as the militant Muslims in the country. On October 1, 2000, an attack was carried out on a Protestant church in Dushanbe, killing seven people and injuring many more. Most of them were Koreans.
