The Protocol Extension Protocol (PEP) is a protocol that was specially developed for the extension of HTTP in order to bridge the dichotomy between an unorganized extension wilderness and targeted specification.

The PEP uses the HTTP header to insert special placeholders for new directives and status codes.

HTTP servers that cannot process this information ignore the PEP or reject it with a special error code. Since there is no central registration for the respective extension, it is always linked to the specific URI .
