Ruth Bernhard

Ruth Bernhard (born October 14, 1905 near Berlin ; † December 18, 2006 in San Francisco ) was an American photographer of German origin. She was a daughter of the well-known poster painter and typographer Lucian Bernhard and his temporary wife Gertrud Aronhold.

Life

Born in Berlin in 1905, Ruth Bernhard emigrated to New York in 1927 after studying at the Berlin Art School . There she worked for a while in the darkroom of the city magazine The Delineator . In 1935 she met the photographer Edward Weston and moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea to learn photography. Eventually she opened her own photo studio in Hollywood , where she often did portraits of celebrity children. In 1953 she moved to San Francisco .

Ruth Bernhard concentrated on the artistic representation of still lifes and children. In the 1950s and 1960s she found her passion in nude photography long before it was socially accepted.

There have already been more than 200 exhibitions of her pictures worldwide.

Her works have been a permanent part of the archives at Princeton University since 1996 .
