Proton synchrotron 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Proton Synchrotron 2 (abbreviation: PS2 ) was a planned synchrotron - particle accelerator with 1346.4 m circumference at CERN . The aim of building the PS2 was to increase the luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider . The plans for the construction of PS2 were discontinued for cost reasons in favor of an extension of the Proton Synchrotron (PS).

history

Even during the construction phase of the LHC, thought was given to ways of increasing the luminosity in the future. The proton synchrotron, which serves as a pre-accelerator, turned out to be the biggest bottleneck, so that at a conference in autumn 2006 a replacement of the PS by a new building was advocated. The options discussed were the PS2 made up of normal conducting magnets and a PS2 + made up of superconducting magnets.

New pre-accelerator systems were planned with the PS2. In addition to the already planned Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) must be replaced with a 5 GeV Superconducting Proton Linac (SPL).

In 2010, doubts arose about the original schedule for increasing the luminosity of the LHC, so that an expansion of the existing infrastructure from PS and PSB was favored over the new construction of PS2. In 2011 the decision was made against building the PS2 for financial reasons.

technology

Plans from 2007 envisage the construction of an oval tunnel made up of two circular arcs with a radius of 156.6 m, connected by two straight sections 180 m apart at a depth of 50 m. The planned circumference of 1250 m resulted in a circumference of 1346.4 m for the best possible synchronization with the Super Proton Synchrotron and the PS. This corresponds to the proportions of 15:77 to the SPS and 15: 7 to the PS.

The planned entry energy of PS2 would have been 4 GeV, the exit energy to the super proton synchrotron 50 GeV.

There were several proposals for the construction of the electromagnets, both in normal and superconducting versions.
