Mental health in the world of work - data and facts

Mental illnesses are gaining in importance: Overall, mental illnesses are the third most common diagnosis group in Germany: 14.7 percent of all sick leave in 2012 can be traced back to mental disorders . Mental illness is also the most common cause of early retirement due to illness . Over the past 22 years, the proportion of people who took early retirement due to mental illness rose from 14.5 to 42.9 percent. There are many reasons for this - the world of work is changing, demands and loads are increasing. In the absence of support and appropriate measures, stress at work can become a psychological burden. In addition, other influencing factors, such as private problems, can also lead to mental illness. When it comes to health, private and professional life can rarely be separated. The number of days absent due to mental illness has risen for decades - most recently between 2001 and 2012 from 33.6 million days of incapacity to work nationwide to 60 million. This corresponds to an increase of more than 97 percent. The consequences for companies and the economy are billions in costs. The direct illness costs for mental illnesses amounted to 6 billion euros in 2012 (2008: almost 4 billion). So stress in the workplace can cost employees - and not only that. a. decreased competitiveness , higher turnover , lower productivity and motivation . Because the mental health of the employees is an important factor for the company's success.

Only healthy employees can use their full potential for the company. Work is healthy if there is a demanding, not overburdening task profile, and services provided receive appropriate social recognition and material gratification. Support from colleagues and support from superiors help protect health. Numerous studies have now shown that good leadership and an employee-oriented corporate culture are worthwhile. And corporate health management is also worthwhile: Scientific cost-benefit analyzes show that every euro invested in OHM saves between two and ten euros and thus has a positive return on investment .
