Pulau Saigon

The island of Pulau Saigon in the 1930s, here with the two bridges and the western and eastern river arms, later filled in.

Pulau Saigon , also known as Pulo Saigon , German Saigon Island, was a small island on the Singapore River in Singapore . It used to be near Robertson Quai . After the southern arm of the river was filled in as part of the land reclamation projects, it no longer exists today and is therefore part of the mainland.

history

The island, originally just a mangrove swamp, first appeared on a map of Singapore in 1878; At that time, the village of Kampong Saigon (literally Saigon village) was located on it, which was shown on the map. After the island was enlarged in 1884, traders moved in and built warehouses there for their goods from Indochina . After 1900 there were also rice and sago mills and various department stores, allegedly also a municipal incinerator for the local garbage.

Since the 1890s, the island was connected to the mainland by the Pulau Saigon Bridge : the so-called Bridge No. 1 connected it to the north bank of the Singapore River, Bridge No. 2 with the south bank. In the early 1970s - in line with the land reclamation project of the city of Singapore - the river arm southwest of the island was filled in, in the 1990s the remaining southeastern waters were reclaimed and the island ceased to exist.
