Powder Tower (Krems)
The Powder Tower in Krems an der Donau is a massive round tower that forms the northeast corner of the former city fortifications and thus towers above the urban situation when approaching the city from the east. Because of its characteristic location, it could be described as the second landmark of Krems. As part of the city wall, it dates from the late 15th century (1477), but it was originally flat-roofed and served as a battery tower .
The cityscape by Matthäus Merian shows this situation and describes it as “Lug ins Land”, its conical roof was only given in the 18th century. For safety reasons, its function as a gunpowder depot was given up in 1752 and relocated to a place outside the city in Gneixendorf (Ried Pulverturm), where, however, there was an explosion in 1851.
