history

Beginnings

The origin of the place is unknown. It is not known whether the bell in the church dated 1638 in Pumpėnai has hung since that time or whether it came here later.

Carmelite Monastery

In 1675 Georg and Paul Sawadski founded a Carmelite monastery . The church and buildings were made of wood and burned down in 1770. They have been rebuilt. A school was established in 1782 and a hospital for the elderly in 1803. In 1820 five monks lived in the monastery, which was closed by the Russian authorities in 1832.

Jewish population

In 1766 there were already 583 Jews living in Pumpėnai, in 1897/98 there were 1007 of the 1471 inhabitants. There was a synagogue and a cemetery. Since the end of the 19th century, many emigrated to America or other places. During the First World War, others fled to the interior of Russia. In 1923 there were again 372 Jewish families living here, in 1941 there were around 60. They were taken to a ghetto in July 1941 and shot with other Jewish people in the area in August.

After 1945

In 2013 Pumpėnai received a coat of arms.
