The Purple Sails ( Russian Алые Паруса , English Scarlet Sails ) is a festival in Saint Petersburg . It is part of the White Nights and takes place annually in the second half of June.

Inspired by the popular children's book The Purple Sail by Alexander Grin and its film adaptation The Purple Sail , it was proposed in the 1960s to celebrate the graduation of Leningrad students together. The first such event took place on June 27, 1968. At that time, a brigantine with purple sails drove on the Neva to the Winter Palace and so the purple sails became the symbol of the event. However, the celebrations stopped in 1979.

On June 24, 2005, the festival took place again for the first time on the initiative of the Saint Petersburg city council. With an extensive supporting program, the now internationally known event has developed into the climax of the White Nights of Saint Petersburg.
