The stratification in this scheme runs horizontally between the trophogenic zone (upper, lighter, low-salt, warm layer) and the tropholytic zone (lower, heavier, high-salt, cold layer) (English labeling)

The pycnocline (from the Greek : πυκνός pyknós = densely packed) is a transition between water layers of different densities in lakes and seas . The difference in density can be caused by the different temperature ( thermocline ) in the temperature stratification , by different salt contents ( halocline ) or by different contents of dissolved solids ( chemocline ) such as B. be caused in meromictic lakes.
