Halocline
A halocline (from old-Greek hals = salt and klínein = to incline; English halocline ) is the transition zone between layers of water with different salinity. Fresh and salt water layers do not mix there, the less salty layers “float” onto the more salty ones. This creates the halocline or salinity jump layer.
The halocline is one of the possible phenomena that are assigned to the pycnocline .
Trivia
The phenomenon of halocline is also in the science fiction miniseries by Dean Devlin Bermuda Triangle - gateway to another time used.
