QDesign Music Codec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

QDesign Music Codec (QDMC) is a proprietary codec for lossy audio data compression .

It was originally developed by Dmitry Shmunk under the name LBpack . QDesign Corporation bought the rights and hired the developer to make it the official audio data compression method for Apple's QuickTime 3. Version 2 is often used alongside the Sorenson video codec for numerous films in QuickTime formats prior to version 7 . As Apple is increasingly turning its back on proprietary codecs such as Sorenson Video and QDesign in favor of open standards such as MPEG-4 , the long life of the codec seems unlikely.

Although it is commonly known as the QDesign Codec, it is officially called RaveSound , according to a press release .

The personal version contained in QuickTime Pro allows bit rates of up to 48 kbit / s , the professional version allows bit rates of up to 128 kbit / s. It is one of the most aggressive of the known codecs. This leads to quite good results at very low bit rates, but leaves too many artifacts at high bit rates (see compression artifacts ).
