The Qasr Al Hosn ( Arabic قصر الحصن, DMG Qasr Al-Hisn ) is a former Fort in Abu Dhabi and the watchtower , the oldest building on the island. It was the seat of the ruling Al Nahyan family and served as a center for protection for the early settlers. After its expansion to today's size under Schachbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the 1940s, it was the seat of government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi until 1966 and after many years of renovation it was reopened as a museum on December 7, 2018.

location

The museum is located in the oldest part of Abu Dhabi in the district of Al Hosn .

Building complex

The actual fort consists of three development stages and further buildings on the same street block surrounded by modern Abu Dhabi.

Watchtower

The watchtower was built under Dhiyab bin Isa in 1761. Today it forms the northeast corner of the Inner Fort.

Inner fort

The actual fort was built between 1793 and 1816 with additional towers and connecting outer walls.

Outer fort

After the first oil production consession was awarded in 1939, the fort was enclosed by a larger fort under Shachbut bin Sultan al Nahyan in the 1940s. Its walls and towers adjoin the old walls and towers in the northeast corner and housed the living and working rooms on two floors in the east and south walls.

National Consultative Council

Between 1968 and 1970, under Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan , a government building was built in front of the gate, in which the government work of the emirate and the federation took place until the 1990s.

House of Craftsmen

The house of craftsmen ( English House of Artisans ) is a modern Musuemsgebäude outside the fort. It houses a small exhibition and practical demonstrations of old handicrafts and traditional Arab coffee culture (Gahwa).
