As Quartiersplatz will place a district ( "district") means, to serve as a social center for residents as well as an identification feature of the respective district. In contrast to market or traffic areas, neighborhood squares focus on recreational and leisure aspects.

history

In the course of urbanization , which reached its peak in Europe for the first time at the end of the 19th century, numerous new urban districts, some of which were very densely built , emerged outside the original cities . In order to meet the needs of the residents of these quarters for relaxation and space, park-like spaces were created. In contrast to the historical town squares, which often only serve representative purposes, these were intended to benefit the population as a space for relaxation and leisure activities, and they also served as an important social meeting point. The term neighborhood square has been in use for these squares at least since the beginning of the 20th century. The neighborhood squares were seen as a substitute for a private garden, which the residents of the neighborhoods usually did not have.

layout

A neighborhood square is mostly designed like a park. In addition to green areas and relaxation areas, there are often children's playgrounds and various options for active leisure activities. Recreation rooms and places for leisure activities are spatially separated depending on the space available in order to prevent mutual interference. The design of the neighborhood squares is intended to serve as an individual point of identification for the respective city districts and their residents.
