Quarup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quarup , also quarupe, kuarup , is a festival of the dead of the Xingu Indians , at which all neighboring tribal groups come together to honor the dead together.

The program included a martial art in which two Indians of different tribes faced each other. The aim was to throw the opponent on the ground and at the same time to touch the back of the knee of the opponent. The fight was rated by the other tribesmen with a special point system.

Quarup had some influence on the Brazilian Capoeira movement.
