Queensberry Column
The Queensberry Column is a memorial in the Scottish city of Dumfries in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1961, the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
The memorial was built in 1780, two years after the death of Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry to whom it is dedicated. The Scottish architect Robert Adam is responsible for the design . The memorial was relocated to a new location on English Street in the 1930s , but moved back to its original location on Queensberry Square in 1990 .
description
The monument stands in the middle of Queensberry Square in central Dumfries. It rests on a stepped foundation with a square base. A cuboid pedestal rises from this, the edges of which are decorated with rams' heads. There is a relief on the west side , while a commemorative plaque is embedded on the south side. Its inscription reads: “This column, sacred to the memory of Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover, was erected by the county of Dumfries, as a monument of their veneration for the character of that illustrious nobleman, whose exalted virtues rendered him the ornament of society, and whose numerous acts of public benefice and private charity endeared him to his country. If. 22nd Oct. 1778; Aet. 80 “A round pillar rises from the pedestal. It closes with a capital on which rests a bowl with a growing gilded flame.
