The Queensland Art Gallery ( QAG ) is an art museum in the South Bank neighborhood of Brisbane , Queensland , Australia . It is part of the Queensland Cultural Center and complements the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), which is just 150 meters away.

The Queensland Art Gallery has been owned by the Queensland State Government since it was founded in 1895.

history

The museum was founded in 1895 as the Queensland National Art Gallery. In the beginning, the gallery was housed in a number of temporary accommodations. It was not until the current building, which is famous for its architecture, opened in 1982 that it finally settled on the South Bank of Brisbane. It was the first step towards the Queensland Cultural Center designed by Robin Gibson.

The Queensland Art Gallery is considered a building of its time as it is made from the best techniques and materials available within budget. It is also the first major building to be built on the south side of the new Victoria Bridge. So it set the standard in terms of size and quality for other buildings.

The Queensland Art Gallery is a 4700 square meter exhibition space surrounded by walls that enable the exchange between the art world and the public. The walls have been built on purpose to guide the visitor through the rooms with constantly changing perspectives. The design is based on the Watermall, which separates the quiet area of the exhibition halls from the busy areas of administration, public events and education. The different roof and storey heights as well as the changing colors and textures of the surfaces contribute to the diversity and define the sequence of the exhibition halls. The entrance foyer serves as a starting point for tours, where visitors can choose which exhibitions they want to see.

The Australian Center of Asia Pacific Art (ACAPA) was then formed to establish connections, grants, publications and an internationally significant Asia-Pacific art collection. Eight events took place up to 2015.
