Ruins of a Quilmes settlement in Tucumán

The Quilmes tribe , which belonged to the Diaguita- Calchaquíes, lived in northwestern Argentina , in today's provinces of Tucumán , Catamarca and Salta , until the Spanish colonized the area . In the 14th century it was subjugated by the Inca , but the Quilmes also took over the advanced technology from them, especially in architecture and agriculture .

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Quilmes offered fierce resistance against the Spaniards , who ultimately prevailed . The fortification of Quilmes in the west of what is now the province of Tucumán has been preserved to this day as a testimony to the bloody war and is one of the greatest archeological attractions in Argentina.

After the defeat by the Spaniards, the tribe was deported to the province of Buenos Aires , where the relatives served as cheap labor and soon disappeared as an independent people due to the poor conditions. The name of the city of Quilmes near Buenos Aires is a reminder of this genocide .
