Quinta do Contador Mor
The Quinta do Contador Mor is a former country estate ( Portuguese quinta ) in the municipality of Olivais in the Portuguese capital Lisbon .
history
The house was built in the 18th century. It belonged to a direct descendant of the first Van Zeller who came to Portugal as the ambassador of the Prussian king. Lourenço Rudolfo Van-Zeller was appointed treasurer (Contador-Mor) by King John V in 1746 . This position remained in his family until it died out. On the facade of the manor house there is still a Van-Zeller coat of arms.
The property is popularly called "Toca" because it is believed that Eça de Queiroz was inspired by Maria Eduarda and Carlos da Maia in his drama Die Maias here .
In the 1990s, the property was restored by the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon and has served the Bedeteca de Lisboa as a cultural and educational venue ever since .
