The Qvidja estate

Qvidja ( Finnish : Kuitia ) is a medieval manor in southwest Finland . It belongs to the city of Pargas and is located a little east of its core city on the island of Lemlax .

Qvidja is the oldest surviving manor in Finland and one of the few noble castles that were built in Finland in the Middle Ages. The oldest parts of today's manor complex date from the late 15th century, but a mansion already existed at this point. Its first known owner was Magnus II Tavast , who was Bishop of Turku from 1412 to 1450 . In 1439 the bishop left Qvidja to his brother Jöns Olofsson and his wife. In 1477 Joachim Fleming , Jöns Olofsson's grandson , inherited the estate and made it the ancestral seat of the Flemings , one of the most important Swedish aristocratic families of the 15th and 16th centuries. Since the 19th century, Qvidja has been owned by the av Heurl family, who still live on the estate today.

The oldest part of Qvidja is a castle-like defense structure. The building made of field stone was built at the end of the 15th century and expanded to four floors in the 16th century. The current residential building was built in the 18th and 19th centuries.
