Röger hook

The Röger hook is a technical device that is intended to simplify or enable the emergency hood release on gliders . It was developed by Wolf Röger , professor at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences , and is now a requirement in all newly approved aircraft designs with a forward opening hood.

In older machines, on which the Röger hook cannot be retrofitted, a spring pin, which has also been tested by Röger, is installed as a replacement, which fixes the hood in its rear position by a kind of hinge until it lifts in front and can fly away over the pilot .

After triggering the emergency hood release, the hood is detached from the front of the aircraft fuselage . Behind a hook Röger by the forced rotation produces over which by the influence of the running wind rotates the hood. The hood is lifted and blown away over the fuselage.

Without Röger hooks it can happen that hoods are only shifted a few centimeters by the airborne wind and do not detach from the fuselage. If the canopy does come off, it can hit the pilot on the head and cause him to pass out.
