Amman's Roman Theater

The Amman Roman Theater is located in the center of Amman , the capital of Jordan . It was either rebuilt during the reign of Antoninus Pius (138–161 AD) or an existing theater was rebuilt and expanded at that time.

According to various calculations, the theater could seat between 6,000 and 11,400 people. The diameter of the semicircular auditorium ( cavea ) is 102 m. The seating steps in the auditorium are divided into three sections by two walkways. The upper section ( summa cavea ) consists of 17 rows of seats; the middle ( media cavea ) and the lower section ( ima cavea ) each consist of 14 rows of seats.

The theater was restored in the 1950s and 1960s and is now back in use. The Amman Opera Festival has been taking place in the theater since 2017 .
