The Roman theater of Clunia Sulpicia

The Roman Theater of Clunia Sulpicia is located near the ancient Roman city of Colonia Clunia Sulpicia in southeastern Burgos Province , Spain . It lies between the present-day localities of Coruña del Conde and Peñalba de Castro .

The theater was probably built during the reign of Tiberius (14–37 AD). In the 2nd century it was rebuilt for animal and gladiator fights.

The theater probably seated between 8,000 and 9,000 people. The diameter of the semicircular auditorium ( cavea ) is 50 m, the depth 10 m. The distance between the stage and the top row of seats is 56 m. The seating steps in the auditorium are divided into three sections. The upper ( summa cavea ) and middle section ( media cavea ) are built directly on the rock below; only the lower section ( ima cavea ) had to be supported.
