Guitarist Jade Synstelien , who moved to New York in 2001, founded the Staring Into the Sun Orchestra , named after the club in which it performed most in 2006. Synstelie brought musicians who often played in other related large formations in the Mingus Big Band , in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in the Roy Hargrove Big Band, in the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band and in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The formation regularly performs on Sundays at Club Fat Cat and also gives guest appearances in clubs such as the Zinc Bar and the Smalls . It is directed by Synstelie, whose compositions and arrangements the band also plays. In 2008 three albums were created, which appeared on the label of the jazz club Smalls.

In 2018 the orchestra performed a program of compositions by Billy Strayhorn , Duke Ellington and Count Basies as well as adaptations by Johann Sebastian Bach and Synstelia's own works.

The American big band should not be confused with the FatCat big band of the same name from the Düren music school.
