The RB 3 was a wet steam - tank locomotive , the 1908 Yard No. 6854 of Borsig in Berlin for the Norwegian railway company Rjukanbanen was built.

history

Rjukanbanen operated a 46 km long, in Norwegian parlance, semi-public route network, which was opened in 1909 and was built with high government subsidies. In addition to the Vestfjorddalsbanen (today's Rjukanbane ) and the railway ferry connection from Mæl via Tinnsjø to Tinnoset , this also included the Tinnosbane , which begins in Tinnoset . The latter was taken over on July 25, 1913 by the state railway company Tinnoset – Porsgrunnbanen , which was owned by Norges Statsbaner (NSB) and Norsk Hydros subsidiary Norsk Transportaktieselskab (RB), and since July 1, 1920 has been managed by the NSB.

The locomotive was purchased from LH Hagen & Co in Christiania for 14,390 Reichsmarks and after delivery in 1908 for internal freight train operations on the Vestfjorddalsbane Mæl– Rjukan and after the opening of the Tinnosbane only on this route. It was equipped with an additional container for coal.

In 1918 the locomotive was loaned to the Norges Statsbaner. On October 1, 1918, the locomotive was given the road number NSB 445 .

NSB type 38a

From 1918 to 1920 the NSB 445 was used as a construction locomotive on the Dovrebane , from September 5, 1919 it was officially assigned to the Hamar district as a shunting locomotive .

In 1921 the locomotive was added to the NSB Type 38a series and provided shunting services until it was shut down in 1925.

It was reactivated on April 2, 1936, when it was needed for the shunting service in the Sundland workshop in Drammen and was assigned to the Drammen district. It remained there until it was put down again on September 3, 1955. It was withdrawn from service on March 8, 1957, after which it was scrapped.
