The vehicles of the series 282.0401 and 282.0421 of the Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (RENFE) were steam locomotives of the Garratt design .

The first six locomotives were delivered in 1931 by Babcock and Wilcox Bilbao for Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, which runs through mountainous areas between Saragossa and Valencia , where they were given track numbers 201 to 206. They were intended for freight train service, but despite the same number of axles, they were smaller and lighter than the class 462.0401 Garratt express locomotives delivered in the same year .

Technical features of the locomotives were sheet metal frames, ACFI feed water preheaters , Walschaerts controls and (in contrast to the 462.0401) standing boilers with a round ceiling. They were originally coal-fired, but were converted to oil-fired in the 1960s.

In 1941 the Zentralbahn was incorporated into RENFE; however, the locomotives stayed on their traditional routes. They were given the numbers 282-0401 to 282-0406. The number 282 is to be understood as 2 x 141, according to the French naming scheme for the wheel arrangement that is common in Spain .

In 1961, 30 years after the first delivery, RENFE purchased ten locomotives of the same type, which were also delivered by Babcock and Wilcox and designated as the 282.0421 series. There were only a few changes compared to the original design; the heating surfaces differed somewhat, and above all the increased inventories resulted in a higher weight (details in brackets in the adjacent table). In addition, the machines were designed for oil firing ex works. The locomotives were given the numbers 282F-0421 to 282F-0430, where the F stands for "fueloil" and indicates the oil firing. Since then, 282F has also been used as the series designation .

The locomotives from 1961 were the last steam locomotives built in Spain and the penultimate Garratts ever, only followed by the last delivery of the NGG 16 class of the South African Railways in 1968.

The 282F remained in service on the Zentralbahn until 1966/67 and then worked on other routes until the 1970s. The locomotive 282F-0421, the first of the delivery from 1961, has been kept operational and is used for special trips.
