The vehicles of the class 462.0401 of the Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (RENFE) were steam locomotives of the Garratt design .

The six locomotives were delivered in 1931 by the Compania Euskalduna for Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, which runs through mountainous areas between Saragossa and Valencia , where they were given track numbers 101 to 106. With the wheel arrangement (2'C1 ') (1'C2') (double Pacific ) they were intended for express train service; At that time it was the largest and most powerful passenger train locomotives in Europe and also the only European Garratts that were used in regular passenger train service.

Technical features of the locomotives were sheet metal frames, ACFI feed water preheaters , Walschaerts control and a Belpaire standing boiler. Originally they were fired with coal.

In 1941 the Zentralbahn was incorporated into RENFE and the locomotives were given the numbers 462-0401 to 462-0406. The number 462 is to be understood as 2 × 231, according to the French designation scheme for the wheel arrangement that is common in Spain .

The locomotives remained stationed in the Valencia depot and were initially used on their original route. From the 1950s, however, they pulled the express train between Barcelona and Seville on the section between Valencia and Tarragona and there ended the previously necessary leader operation . This use only ended in 1967 with the introduction of diesel locomotives on this section.

After the conversion to oil firing in the 1960s, the locomotives were given the numbers 462F-0401 to 462F-0406, where the F stands for "fueloil". Since then, 462F has also been used as the series designation .

After leaving the express train service, the Garratts were still used in freight train operations for a few years. The 462F-0401 locomotive has been preserved, but is currently not operational.
