Pocket calculator HP 35s

The HP 35s is a scientific calculator from Hewlett-Packard , which appeared of 2007. He is the current representative in a long line of non-graphical, scientific, and programmable pocket calculators from Hewlett-Packard. Although it is the successor to the HP 33s in chronological order , it was introduced in honor of the 35th anniversary of the HP-35 , which was the world's first scientific pocket calculator.

Although the HP 35s has far more features, processing power and memory than the original HP-35, Hewlett-Packard tried hard to give it the look of the HP-35 and other HP calculators from that era. The device has the bevelled front keys typical of earlier HP pocket calculators.

Features compared to the historic HP-35

Electronics board of the HP-35s

Like all HP pocket calculators of its generation, the HP 35s can be operated in both classic reverse Polish notation and in algebraic notation. In contrast to the original HP-35, the HP 35s can be programmed by recording keystrokes. In addition to the normal operations, the programs can also contain conditional and unconditional branches and loops.

Other special features include:

  • A two-line alphanumeric LC matrix display
  • partial menu navigation (e.g. for the display format)
  • 26 storage registers (marked with the letters A – Z) and one index register
  • Scientific and statistical functions
  • Different number systems: decimal, binary, octal, hexadecimal
  • Numerical solution of equations (available for the first time with the HP-34C )
  • Numerical integration (also for the first time with the HP-34C)
  • Input and display of fractions (first time with the HP-32SII )
  • Complex numbers (available for the first time on the HP-15C ) and vector calculations
  • Unit conversion and table with physical constants
  • About 30 KiByte memory for programs and / or data

Differences to the previous model HP 33s

The exterior and the key assignment of the HP 35s are very different from its immediate predecessor, the HP 33s. Both are functionally almost identical.

The main differences are:

  • In addition to referencing brands (labels) in programs, the HP 35s also allows reference to line numbers. With only 26 marks (letters A – Z), it would be difficult to write programs that use up the entire 30 KiB of memory.
  • The memory of the HP 35s can also be used to store around 800 addressable numbers.
  • The support of vector operations is new to the HP 35s.
  • Indirect addressing, which enables the numerical value of a memory register to be used as the target address of a jump command (commands GTO and XEQ), was possible with the HP 33s, but is missing with the HP 35s.

Development and manufacturing

Although the HP 35s is supposed to recall the tradition of the scientific HP pocket calculator, the device was not developed by Hewlett-Packard alone, but in cooperation with the Taiwanese manufacturer Kinpo . Production now takes place exclusively at this OEM supplier.

The HP 35s uses the SPLB31A integrated circuit from Sun Plus , which contains an 8502 type processor in addition to an LCD controller and IO unit .
