Pocket calculator HP 32SII

The HP-32S and its successor, the HP 32SII, are programmable technical and scientific pocket calculators from Hewlett-Packard that were on the market from 1988 to 2002 (HP-32S from 1988 to 1991 and HP 32SII from 1991 to 2002). In terms of functionality and appearance, both devices are part of a long series of non-graphical pocket calculators that were founded in 1972 with the HP-35 . After the HP 32SII was phased out and a five-year break, the tradition was continued in 2007 with the HP 35s anniversary device .

HP-32S

Like its predecessors, the HP-32S is operated in the reverse Polish notation (UPN). Although the device was priced cheaply at $ 70  compared to other HP calculators, it had a variety of features:

  • Numerical solution of equations
  • Numerical integration
  • Variables marked with letters (A – Z and i)
  • Arithmetic functions for complex numbers that occupy two stack levels
  • Programmability
  • Switchability between different number systems
  • Dot matrix display in LCD technology

The pocket calculator has 390 bytes of memory, which was quickly exhausted when storing some variables (8 bytes per variable used) and programs (1.5 bytes per program line). While the HP-34C only equations of the type able to solve, it is also possible for the first time in HP-32S to determine the zeros of UPN defined functions of several variables relating to any arguments .

As with the similarly structured types 20S and 42S, it is supplied via three button cells of type LR-44. No extensions are planned and no interfaces are built in. The computer housing is welded and cannot be opened non-destructively.

An anniversary edition for the 50th anniversary of HP with a gold lettering was only sold to shareholders and employees. It is functionally identical.

HP 32SII

The successor model, the HP 32SII, had a second shift key, roll-up , unit conversions and the ability to enter fractions directly and calculate with them. Also new was the algebraic input mode for formulas, which enables functions to be entered in the usual notation in order to then evaluate them, solve them as an equation for any variable or integrate them numerically. The available storage space has not been expanded compared to the previous model.
