Ilai I.
Ilai I. or Ilai the Elder was a third generation Tannait . He was the father of the important Mishna teacher Jehuda ben Ilai and probably worked at the time of the Hadrianic persecution around 135.
Ilai was a student of Eliezer ben Hyrcanus and Gamaliel II. He was mentioned once in the Mishnah and six times in the Tosefta .
