The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is a 37 square kilometer nature reserve that consists of several individual areas along the south coast of the US state of Maine . The nature reserve was established in 1966 and bears its name in honor of the biologist and non-fiction author Rachel Carson , who with her book The Silent Spring drew attention to the effects of DDT on birds, among other things .

The reserve encompasses several different habitats including a marsh , dunes , sandy beach, a tidal estuary, and rocky seashore. The protected species that breed in this nature reserve include the yellow-footed plover and the rose tern .
