Radiant is a French comic by Tony Valente that has been published by Ankama Éditions, an Ankama Group company, since July 2013 . Twelve volumes have been published since 2013 and a 13th is expected to appear in 2020. The German translation has been published by Pyramond since 2016 . The first season of an adaptation as an anime aired in 2018 and the second season started in October 2019.

Summary

The beginning

The world of Radiant is attacked daily by countless bloodthirsty creatures. Nobody knows where they come from or what they want, only that they fall from the sky as an egg to the ground and once a monster hatches. These beings are called nemesis. For ordinary citizens it is unimaginable to fight against the nemesis, because just touching it you become infected and you die. However, there are also people who have survived such contact and continue to live as "infected". These survivors also received something else to harness the power of Fantasia. Through Fantasia, a force that flows through the whole world, one can work magic and accomplish the unimaginable. And so those wizards faced the nemesis as nemesis hunters in order to destroy them. But the wizards frightened people. Their power and powers came from the Nemesis and so they were an evil one. As a result, the wizards have been forced to live on the fringes of society and are discriminated against and feared just like the nemesis. Seth, a fifteen-year-old survivor of a nemesis attack, also wants to become a wizard. He travels the world with his teacher and foster mother Alma. He has also had to live with the discrimination and aggressiveness towards him since he was a child and so he makes the decision to search for and destroy the radiant, the place where all nemesis are.

The inquisition

Shortly after leaving home, Seth encounters an Inquisition ship. The Inquisition is an organization that has set itself the task of taking action against the magicians. In his ignorance he goes on their ship and to escape he uses magic. Since this is a criminal offense for the Inquisition, they lock him up and want to take him to their headquarters. For him, however, this turns out to be a happy coincidence, because through it he meets the sorceress Mélie in prison. With their help and that of their researcher friend Doc, they can free themselves and flee to Artémis, the island of wizards, in time. Seth meets the Inquisition again and again in the course of his journey and has to fight against them. Most inquisitors see sorcerers as a danger to mankind, as they could abuse their power to subjugate people.

Artémis

Artémis is a city that hovers in the sky and is ruled by a cat-like animal named Master Lord Majesty. In order to become a citizen of the city, in his naivety, he signs a letter, which only transfers debts to him and he is therefore bound to the city. Once in town, he tries to find a friend of his old master Alma Yaga, one of the 13th magicians from the circle, the strongest magicians in the world. This should help him to become stronger and give him more clues about the radian. During his training, Seth finds out that he is one of the only people who can collect Fantasia without gloves, i.e. without a magical item, and thus can use magic. Since this is not common even among wizards, they try to keep it secret so that nothing will happen to him. In Artémis, Seth also experiences a lot of unpleasant things, because he is such a clumsy guy and has no idea how to deal with money, he drifts more and more into debt and after a short time even receives the title "Debt King" because he is by far has the most debt in the entire city. This to the regret of the researcher Doc, as he has to pay off Seth's debts. Master Lord Majesty uses this again and again to give them tasks and at celebrations of their honor he manages to impose even more debts on them.

The fight in Rumble Town

The city of Rumble Town is the closest town to Artémis. Seth goes there with his friends, he and his friends receive a letter asking for their help. Because it seems that people have disappeared from the outer districts of the city recently and it is believed that nemesis are at work. In addition, a child may show signs of infection and their family is worried about their well-being. Once there, they see the grievances that exist in the city. The immigrants who live and work outside the city live in poverty and misery, with the city itself prospering. Seth, Mélie, and Doc find out that the incidents are really the work of Nemesis. However, these were instigated by a Dominator, someone who can control Nemesis. After further research, with a new ally named Grimm, a bandaged wizard, they find out that this is an even worse conspiracy. Because it is the Inquisition of Rumble Town that is behind all these incidents. They want to "clean" the city from the large number of immigrants, so their explanation. With the help of Grimm, Seth succeeds in dissuading the Dominator from destroying the city and bringing her to her side. However, all of a sudden the miracle workers, an elite troop of the Inquisition, appear who want to take Seth prisoner. The Dominator sacrifices herself so that Seth and his friends can escape. This causes something unnatural for Seth, because something evil takes possession of him and he rages uncontrollably in the city and fights with almost inhuman forces against the miracle workers. In the last second the four manage to return safely to Artémis with the help of Master Lord Majesty.

The consequences

After this fight, Seth no longer knows what is right and what is wrong. He is afraid of his strength and of himself and therefore he goes on to the city of knights, Caislean Merlin, without Mélie and Doc. However, he quickly realizes that he has no easy game without her. By chance and luck, he finally manages to partially master his superhuman strength and to reconcile with Mélie and Doc. And so they continued their journey.

Anime
On January 31, 2018, an anime adaptation was announced for October of the same year in Japan and September 2019 in France . The first season with 21 episodes was directed by Seiji Kishi and Daiki Fukuoka in the Lerche animation studio. On the day of the last episode, NHK announced that there would be a second season, also with 21 episodes.
