Radio Capital is an Italian radio station from Rome . The station belongs to the media company Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso . The program consists of journalistic content and music. The studios are located in Rome at Via Cristoforo Colombo 90.

history

It started broadcasting in May 1977 in Cormano under the name Controradio Cormano . Radio Capital was founded by Roberto Tracogna and renamed Radio Extra 2000 after a year on the air and had its new headquarters in Cusano Milanino . In 1980 the name was changed, based on the Capital Radio from London , to Radio Capital and at the same time the claim "Dance all day" was added, which identified the format as focusing exclusively on dance music (mainly Italian at the time). The range was improved by moving the station from the old location at the Palazzo di Sesto San Giovanni to the Breda tower in Milan . In the following year a company of the same name was founded. In 1982 the founder Roberto Tracogna left the company. Although the project received positive feedback from the public, it was not able to translate this into commercial value with advertising customers and therefore got into a crisis.

In 1987 the station was transformed from the Deejay's Gang around Claudio Cecchetto and Gallorini Valerio to a platform for experiments with programs in English only under the direction of Ronny Hanson and David Lee Stone, who died in 2005. The direction of the station changed again to a format for disco oldies from the 1970s and received positive feedback from the public for the special originality. At that time, such specialized transmitters were a rarity.

When Law 223/1990 (also known as Legge Mammì) came into force in 1990, Cecchetto applied for approval as a local radio station for Lombardy, after having already applied for a national license for the other radio station he oversees, Radio Deejay. After leaving Radio Deejay, Cecchetto realized that the station had to achieve supraregional, or better still, national, broadcasting in order to become the market leader, so he went looking for a radio station that had already received a license for national broadcasting to take over. In the mid-1990s he found Radio Centro Toscana SpA (publisher of Gamma Radio Network), a broadcasting group that had already applied for local and national licenses, but had decided to only promote local distribution for the time being. Radio Capital then acquired the national license without taking over the other station or its brand name. Cecchetto realized that more financial resources than before would be needed in order to be able to compete with the major publishing groups. He therefore sold Radio Capital to the Elemedia company of the L'Espresso Group, which had previously acquired shares in Radio Deejay, in order to then restart the station with significant improvements in the areas of transmission technology and media presence.

Today Radio Capital is one of three national radio stations (together with m2o and Radio Deejay ) owned by the Elemedia company of the L'Espresso Group. Vittorio Zucconi is responsible for the station's editorial management. At the end of April 2007, the Italian DJ Linus, former director of Radio Deejay, also took over the artistic direction of m2o and Radio Capital from Carlo Mancini.
