Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier (born March 14, 1949 in Diriamba , Nicaragua ) is a Costa Rican politician ( PUSC ). From May 8, 1990 to May 8, 1994 he was President of Costa Rica. His father, Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia , held this position from 1940 to 1944.

His godfather was Nicaragua's dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle .

Until Calderón Fournier founded the Partido Republicano Calderonista in 1976 , he was a member of the Partido Unificación Nacional . In 1983 he founded the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana .

Calderón was arrested in October 2004 on suspicion of corruption . In 2005 he was released from custody.

In 2009 he was again a candidate for the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana for the 2010 presidential election. However, he withdrew his candidacy after he was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in October 2009 by a court in Costa Rica's capital San José for corruption allegations . He was found guilty, along with seven other co-defendants, of receiving a total of US $ 8 million in bribes for purchasing medical devices in Finland at the expense of the state social security system. The Supreme Court of Appeals reduced the sentence to three years in May 2011 and granted a probation period of five years.
